Developing these spaces helps students focus on academics, but they also serve as recruitment tools and a way to convince students to remain on campus following their freshman year. "Living-learning provides a diferentiated product in the core of campus," according to Julie Skolnicki, EdR's senior vice presi- dent of university partnerships. Honors programs use the liv- ing-learning space to bring in lecturers or seminar series, and open them up for outside speak- ing engagements. "Universities in general are looking to make classrooms into multi-use spaces, especially with the school day ending in the afternoon and space around campus being limited," says Skolnicki. According to Sarah Samuels, director of advisory services at The Scion Group, the honors col- leges are benefcial to universi- ties where enrollment is down or that want to be more selective but didn't necessarily need more beds.
