JULY/AUGUST 2015 STUDENT HOUSING BUSINESS .COM 34 INDUSTRY COMPENSATION 2015 STUDENT HOUSING INDUSTRY COMPENSATION SURVEY Specialty Consultants (SCI) recently conducted its annual Student Housing Industry Compensation Survey Report, in conjunction with Student Housing Business. By Josh Logelin S CI sent an e-mail invitation and a link to an online survey form to 260 senior executives at student housing industry frms requesting 2014 salary and incentive information for their companies. This was followed up with telephone calls requesting participation and a reminder e-mail. Additionally, the survey was sent to approximately 1500 professionals rep- resenting a cross-section of the positions covered in the survey. The survey was also open to readers of studenthousingbusi- ness.com via a banner advertisement and participation was also encouraged through a sponsored post on LinkedIn that appeared in major student housing-oriented groups. As a result, participation in the survey was nearly double what it was in 2014. The resulting information was compiled and analyzed to produce a statistical abstract of annual compensation categorized by company size and to determine any meaningful trends. Investor appetite is keeping student housing development pipelines growing at record rates and compensation for construction and development professionals is increasing right along with them. Individuals involved in those functions experienced the greatest gains across all three company size categories, and this will certainly continue into 2016. Also, we are at the phase in the cycle where we begin to see more risk and reward: smaller, entrepreneurial companies are beginning to make signifcant strategic growth moves, which includes paying more for top talent. And professionals who feel stymied by the more rigid organizational and compensation structures at larger frms are joining them to take advantage of what they perceive to be greater long-term opportunities. This will continue until company growth fuels another round of portfolio and corporate acquisitions that levels the compensation playing feld once again. Specialty Consultants Inc., is an executive search frm serving the real estate and construction industry.
