The position also offered me an expansion into food services and the intellectual challenge of learning that industry and performing the work I'd already done for 15 years, but through the lens of an auxiliary enterprise. When I arrived at UC, we had about 32,000 students. Our enrollment is now more than 44,000 students. We have signature colleges in design, archi- tecture and planning, engineering and the conserva- tory of music. These nationally ranked programs are attracting students from around the world. UC also has a medical campus and a law school. We are a com- prehensive and high-activity research institution in an urban context, which results in a very compact cam- pus. All of our facilities — including parking — are vertical, meaning above and below ground. There's no surface parking on our campus — it's pedestrian friendly. This is the outcome of a comprehensive cam- pus master plan completed in 2005. SHB: What's the housing like today at UC, and what was it like before you arrived? Duncan: We have a housing requirement for freshmen that come from more than 50 miles away from campus. This puts us in the minority in Ohio — most campuses have a two-year live-on requirement.
