March/April 2018 4 FROM THE EDITOR The first quarter of 2018 is coming to a close as we put this issue to bed, and the year is off to a strong start for the student housing industry. There were some major acquisitions in the off-campus space at the end of 2017, and while the beginning of 2018 is quiet (from an announcement perspective), there are plenty of deals lurking below the surface. The indus- try has and will have lots of news to share, just in time for InterFace Student Housing, April 4-6 at the JW Marriott in Austin. In this issue, we take a look at the Top Developers in the industry, as well as the Top Investors. Both groups are extremely active. There have been billions invested in the sector over the past few years, especially foreign and institutional capital. The industry is also seeing sustained strong development numbers, with an average of 45,000 new beds opening each fall — and that is just the number created by our Top 25 private developers. We also take a look in this issue at how interior design is being utilized to inspire students — and lease beds. As well, we look at creating ancil- lary income and how to measure third-party management companies. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible in Austin.
