CAMPUS UPDATE January/February 2018 24 Chapman University CHAPMAN UNIVERSITY RECEIVES APPROVAL FOR STUDENT HOUSING DEVELOPMENT Orange, Calif. — Chapman University has received approval for the adaptive reuse of a historic citrus packing house and the development of a new 402-bed student housing community adjacent to the univer- sity's campus in Orange. The historic Villa Park Orchards Association Packing House will be converted into a museum, student services center and classrooms or offices for the university. The new student housing development will target upperclassmen, and is being designed to reflect the character of the Packing House and the surrounding community. The project's designers are Togawa Smith Martin Inc. and AC Martin. KTGY Architecture + Planning is the university's design advisor and project representative, and has helped to ensure project consistency, coordinate with various design firms, provide design recommendations and shep- herd the project through the approval process. Additional details and a planned completion date have yet to be announced. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign JOINT VENTURE BREAKS GROUND ON 548-BED COMMUNITY NEAR THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT URBANA-CHAMPAIGN Champaign, Ill. — A partnership between The Opus Group and The Carlyle Group has broken ground on a 548-bed community near the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus in Champaign. The 14-story community will offer floor plans ranging from junior studio units with full-size kitchens to four-bedroom units with bed-to-bath parity. Each bedroom will have solid doors with individual locks for each resident to secure belongings in their space. Shared amenities will include an indoor basketball court; fitness center and spa; a coffee bar; group study rooms and lounges; a club room with pool tables, ping pong tables and large screen televisions; and an outdoor amenity space with a pool, fire pits and grilling stations. Construction began in December 2017, and will be complete prior to the 2019 fall academic semester. Georgia State University SOUTH CITY PARTNERS TO BREAK GROUND ON $90 MILLION STUDENT HOUSING TOWER NEAR GEORGIA STATE Atlanta — South City Partners is set to break ground on 120 Piedmont, a 26-story student housing tower located near Georgia State University in Atlanta. SunTrust Banks recently closed on a $58.3 million construction loan for the project, which is scheduled for completion in August 2019. The 467,125-square-foot community is set to offer 685 beds and 8,200 square feet of retail space. Shared amenities will include a rooftop deck with an outdoor living room, grilling area and study space; a resort-style pool; clubhouse; state-of-the-art fitness center; on-site library; and an internet café.
